2023-11-24

Introduction:

Since its initial release in 2003, "Call of Duty" has become the best-selling first-person shooter game series in history. Of course, "Call of Duty" has two pillars: multiplayer mode and single-player campaign. For those of us who don't want to engage in chaotic battles in online arenas, the quality of the campaign is especially important!
So, which "Call of Duty" game has the best campaign? We have selected our top 10 favorite single-player story modes from the series' nearly 20 years of history.
Here are the top 5 "Call of Duty" campaign modes we have chosen.

5. "Call of Duty: Black Ops II"

When "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" was released, it injected much-needed fresh blood into the series and fundamentally changed the entire "Call of Duty" franchise. "Black Ops II" gave players more power to influence the direction of the storyline through branching paths, optional missions, and multiple endings. These elements combined to make it one of the most replayable and immersive campaigns in the series.
"Black Ops II" is partly set in the late 1980s when the Cold War is about to end, and partly set in the fictional 2025 during the Second Cold War. The previous protagonist, Alex Mason, returns, and his son, David Mason, makes his debut as a protagonist in the 2025 portion. However, a significant part of the brilliance of "Black Ops II" comes from the main antagonist, Raul Menendez. He is not just another villain in the "Call of Duty" series but a tragic product of the Cold War. For series fans or players who expect more creative storytelling rather than just shooting, "Call of Duty: Black Ops II" is a must-play game.

4. "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2" (2009)

Infinity Ward made a powerful entrance into the modern setting with "Modern Warfare" in 2007, and its sequel did not disappoint. "Modern Warfare 2" in 2009 precisely met the needs of players, bringing more of the "Modern Warfare" series. The fictional political drama escalated, and we got to know Soap and Captain Price better, not to mention the unforgettable insane ending. Sheffield stabs you with a knife, but after frantically pressing buttons, you manage to pull the knife out and thrust it into his eye socket, completing the ultimate revenge. This is an absolutely unmissable campaign that you won't be able to stop talking about with your colleagues.

3. "Call of Duty 2"

The original "Call of Duty" was a first-person shooter game developed by Infinity Ward for the PC platform, and it received a good response when it was released. At the time, Infinity Ward was still a fledgling studio, and the founding members had previously developed "Medal of Honor: Allied Assault" for EA, but they signed an agreement with Activision after the establishment of the new studio. After the success of their first WWII-themed campaign in the new studio, they aimed to release an even better sequel. This sequel became a launch title for Xbox 360. The campaign mode, set again during World War II, performed exceptionally well, and the upgraded capabilities of the Xbox 360 brought impressive smoke effects, making smoke grenades not only a gameplay mechanism but also a selling point of the new generation console.
The success of "Call of Duty 2" helped Microsoft kick off the brilliant era of Xbox 360 and usher in a new HD gaming era - and it's 60fps too.

2. Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare

Before the release of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare in 2007, Call of Duty was already a significant IP. However, after the fourth installment jumped from World War II to the modern era, the series went from being a popular franchise to becoming the top-tier IP - without question. Call of Duty became the big brother of FPS games with this installment, and for good reason. It brought unforgettable heroes like Soap and Captain Price, as well as cool scenarios like the AC 130 gunship mission, escaping from a cargo ship in a storm, witnessing a nuclear explosion, and unleashing fiery bullets in the final moments of being able to shoot.

1. Call of Duty: Black Ops

Call of Duty: Black Ops took this strong first-person shooter series to places like Cuba and Vietnam, creating a spy-filled journey in the 1960s. It delivered the best campaign and the best soundtrack in the series. Black Ops took players on a dazzling ride and reached its climax with one of the coolest plot twists in any game from that year - arguably the most shocking storyline in the Call of Duty series thus far.
Among the development teams in the Call of Duty series, aside from the original game creators at Infinity Ward, the most important team is arguably the "T team" Treyarch. They demonstrated their prowess in developing Black Ops, turning their impressive work in Call of Duty: World at War into the hidden prologue of Black Ops and proving they deserved the same recognition as Infinity Ward. Black Ops later became a crucial sub-brand of the Call of Duty franchise, and it all began with this installment.
